EVRAZ decarbonizes a metallurgical plant in the USA.

It would seem that there could be more unshakable and conservative, in terms of the technological process and the provision of it with electricity, than the steel industry. Ferrous metallurgy has always been one of the most important air pollutants in the areas where enterprises are located. But this area is gradually shifting to the «rails» of using clean energy. Not so long ago, you might have learned that the largest German steel producer

Metallurgical # plant in Pueblo, Colorado, which is part of a steel and mining company

Under this project, the #evraz North America plant in Pueblo will be the first in North America to use the electricity generated by the solar power plant for its technological process. The solar power plant itself will be located on the territory of the plant, at 647.5 hectares. The cost of the project is $ 285 million. # the power plant will be built #lightsource bp, and put into operation by the end of 2021.

By the way, Lightsource BP has built or financially closed more than 900 MW of solar power this year and plans to commission 1,000 MW of capacity in 2021. And this is another example of the conversion of an old oil company, when it begins to actively develop a new for itself, and so important for the environment, type of business. As you can see, it is not only oil that can bring money. Clean, renewable energy is a good multi-tiered business that not only provides money, clean electricity and clean air, but also a favorable reputation, which is very important, remembering the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Says Kevin Smith, CEO of Lightsource BP for the Americas, “

Alice Jackson, President of Xcel Energy Colorado (local project operator), “

It can be said on full grounds that after the electric vehicle industry and energy, the next industry that will take the path of decarbonization will be metallurgy. One important question remains. Considering that Evraz Group is a Russian metallurgical and mining conglomerate (Roman Abramovich — 31.03% of shares, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company Alexander Abramov — 21.61%, President and CEO Alexander Frolov — 10.79%, Gennady Kozovoy — 5, 90% and Alexander Vagin — 5.84%), although formally registered in London (if I’m not mistaken), will similar projects, which are now being implemented in Colorado, be created in Russia? Many Russian cities, in which, or nearby, metallurgical plants are located, are suffocating from smog and ash. Only a baby does not know about the «black sky» of Krasnoyarsk. I would like our Russian factories to gradually begin the transition to decarbonized energy.

I watched EVRAZ’s advertising and environmental video here, of course, it made me happy, it shows interesting figures showing that the company is also going in the right direction in Russia, from an environmental point of view. But I would like to see in our country a project similar to the Colorado one.
